On hookahs and abusers

April 27, 2014 § 2 Comments

Heard a song on TV the other day. It was in Punjabi – rather than in Hindi – as most ‘hep’ songs are nowadays and sounded like a whole lot of gibberish. This even though I can make out some of the Punjabi words. I try to make a translation into Hindi and get a sense of what the song is about. Imagine my shock then when I heard this song and got to know that it is about luring innocent girls into a gali and boinking them on the head with a hookah. Repeatedly.

Don’t believe me? Here goes a stanza and translation from the song…

Saadi gaali aaja saanu chaahan waaliye
Tennu hokkah maarda phiraan

Come to my street, o my lover,
I keep calling out for you..

Ik waari aaja door jaan waaliye
Tenu hokaah marda phiraan

Come once, O the-one-who-left-me,
I’ll roam around hitting you with a hookah!

Preposterous I say! 😛

PS: Yes, yes. This is not the correct translation. I know.

Love & Fire

December 31, 2010 § 1 Comment

“Love is fire, whether it warms a heart or burns down a house, nobody can tell”

Cupid smiled as he recalled these words. Adding wood to this fire was his job. It wasn’t a particularly easy job though. Love, like fire, burns.

Ishq tey atish dono barabar
Adey ishq da ta-vikhayra
Atish sadey hay pakh te-paan
Adey ishq sadey dil jherra
Atish pani naal bujheyndi
Adey ishq da daaru kehraa

Love and Fire are the same, though love weighs heavier. Fire may burn things, but Love burns the heart. Fire may be quelled by water, but what is it that quells love?

Watching mortals scorch themselves with this fire, he recalls words he heard a long long time ago.

Uthay chhana rakhi
Jithay ishq laway dayra

Do not lend your heart there, where passions may run high

And, he remembered his own indiscretions. It was the universe’s first on-the-job accident.

His mother had sent him to make Psyche fall in love with the vilest thing in the world. Mother had her reasons to do so. But he accidentally scratched himself with the arrow he had prepared for Psyche and fell in love with her. Night after night he used to visit her while she slept…

Hulhula ke ishq jo aaiya
Mohabat wala shor machaiya
Hulhula ke ishq jo aaiya
Mohabat wala shor machaiya
Ghati ghati shaam aai hai
Yaar dadhi ishq aatish laee hai
Yaar dadhi ishq aatish laee hai
Way yaar sano[O, friend]
way dost sano lag gayee bayakhtearee
Sano lag gayee bayakhtearee
Seenay day vich na samaee hai…

So deliberately has love come…cried out its intentions..and it has blossomed this evening. Love has kindled a fire, a fire over which I have no control.

And then they had a misunderstanding, as all love stories do, due to which he resolved never to meet her. But Psyche was made of sterner stuff. She looked all over the world looking for him. Love makes you do things like that, he thought.

Ishq away-ra bahan na dayndaa
Thee kadaan ker mast karayndaa
Ishq away-ra bahan na dayndaa
Oh thee kadaan ker mast karayndaa
Ghati ghati shaam aai hai
Yaar dadhi ishq aatish laee hai
Yaar dadhi ishq aatish laee hai

Love is strange, it pushes you in waters deep but it wont let you drown. Sometimes, it drives you mad. But it has blossomed this evening. Love has kindled a fire, Love has kindled a fire…

They were fortunate, he thought. Psyche was granted immortality by the Gods. They live happily ever after.

Mortals, unfortunately, are not so fortunate.

[The lyrics here are from the song “Yar Daddi” by Ali Zafar. It is in Saraiki]

Yar Daddi–Ali Zafar

Ki tum meri koi nahin…

April 22, 2009 § 3 Comments

Agar kabhi tum guzarta dekho… (if you see me passing by…)
kya tum mujhe bulaogi??… shayad nahi (will you call out to me? Maybe not)
agar jo fir hum kabhi na mile to(if we never meet again…)
kya tum yaad aaogi… nahi(…will i still think of you? Maybe not)
kyo ki tum meri koi nahi (…coz ur nothing to me)
main janta hu magar ho jab meri koi nahi (even if i know that you are nothing to me…)
kyo lagti ho mujhko parayi nahi(….then why don’t you seem like a stranger to me?)

jab bhi mile hum aisa laga fir, milege nahi(whenever we met, it seemed like it would be our last)
fir bhi na jane kisi bhahane milte gaye hum tum magar kahi na kahi(but somehow, somewhere we did keep meeting…)
jab aaj koi nahi hai bhahana fir kyo thar jaye kadam yahi(but today, when there is no excuse to meet, then why do my feet move towards you?)
ho tum meri koi nahi main janta hu magar(I know that you are nothing to me…)
ho jab meri koi nahi kyo lagti ho mujhko parayi nahi(but, when you are nothing to me, why don’t you seem like a stranger to me???)

[This is one of my favourite songs, been meaning to do a translation pretty long for this. Well, I have, and today of all days…hehe, such is life (where is the sighing wala smiley when u need it?? 😀 ) Have left out the last paragraph of the song, couldn’t translate it properly. It sounded lame 😛 oh, before i forget, this is from the movie ‘Socha Na Tha’ ]

Slow Roasted Nights aka Tandoori Nights

October 15, 2008 § 11 Comments

In the relatively short history of this blog, I have brought to the readers translations of some good, meaningful songs like Javeda Zindagi and Aaoge Jab Tum and lyrics/translations of some weird songs like You are my chicken fry and Love you unconditionally. It is a tedious job people. Translating songs requires much energy and brains (of which I have very little 😛 ). I was tired of translations and meanings and so forth, and no song stirred me as such to take it up once more. Just when I thought that I would give up this hobby once and for all, out came Tandoori Nights shining like a beacon from the wasteland of inane lyrics and lifted tunes. Here is a song that is so inane, so meaningless that it makes You are my chicken fry look like an ode to classical lyric writing.

I have pakaoed you guys enough, here it is then, the lyrics and (I think) the translation of this much revered song(mark my words, this song will go down in history, thou as what still remains to be seen 😀 )

Shama sharabi dono jahan sharabi,(light is a drunkard, both the worlds are drunkards)
Rutt rawa sharabi, dildar ve,(the wind and environment are drunkards, oh my darling)
Hawa sharabi, teri ada sharabi, (the air is a drunkard, your behavior is that of a drunkard)
Yeh fiza sharabi, dildar ve.. (the breeze is a drunkard, oh my darling)

(yes, somebody was drunk alright 😀 )

Tanha tanha hai din, (lonely are the days)
Tanha tandoori nights,(lonely are tandoori nights :O )
If loving you is wrong,
I don’t wanna be right.. (todally…)

Rabba rabba meri jaan jale, jale, jale, jale.. (oh god my body burns, burns, burns…(makes sense, being tandoori nights and all))
Tere bin tere bine meri jaan jale, jale, jale, jale(Without you, my body burns burns burns)
(Noise… Tandoori Nights)

Tere sadke mein jau,(I prostate before you)
Karle aitbaar ve,(Have faith in me)
Tere dum se hi yaara,
Mera sansaar ve..(My world is contained in you)
Tujhpe fida hai mere husn ki bahar ve,(The world of my beauty I give to you)
Duniya se mujhko nahi, koi darkar ve,(I don’t have anything to do with this world)
Jiya yeh dhadhka, bada hi tadpa,(My heart beats, it has faced torture…)
Laga jo tadka pyaar ka..(…because of the garnish of love)
Mere zehen pe, mere jigar pe,(On my mind, on my heart…)
Nasha tere iqraar ka.. (…is the headiness of your love)

Tanha tanha hai din,(lonely are the days)
Tanha tandoori nights,(lonely are tandoori nights)
If loving you is wrong,
I don’t wanna be right.. (truly)

Rabba rabba meri jaan jale, jale, jale, jale..(Oh God, My body burns burns burns…)
Tere bin tere bine meri jaan jale, jale, jale, jale(Without You, my body burns burns burns)

Teri aashiqui hai mere jaan ka jahan ve,(Your love is the world of my life)
Tujhse judi hai meri saari daastan ve,(All my stories are connected to you)
Tujhe paa ke aaya mere,
Dil ko itminaan ve,(My heart is content after achieving you :O )
Faasle rahe naa koi,
Apne darmiyaan ve.. (Nothing should separate us now)

Teri lagan laagi, tere lagan laagi, teri lagan sunn yaar ve,(I worship you, O Friend)
Teri agan jaagi, teri agan jaagi, teri agan dildar ve,(I need you, O Darling)
Tanha tanha hai din, (lonely are days)
Tanha tandoori nights,(lonely are tandoori nights)
If loving you is wrong,
I don’t wanna be right..

Rabba rabba meri jaan jale, jale, jale, jale..(Oh God, My body burns, burns, burns…)
Tere bin tere bine meri jaan jale, jale, jale, jale(Without you, my body burns burns burns)

So, we have a song which proclaims everything around it as drunk and which has elements of food fetishism and open proclamations of a something called tandoori nights(which could have deep meaning…it could mean that the atmosphere inside a disco/pub is like that of a tandoori…a telling comment that would be on the ways of the young generation) or maybe the lyrics writer was drunk.

Aaoge Jab Tum…

March 11, 2008 § 10 Comments

Aaoge Jab Tum O Saajna…..
Aaoge Jab Tum O Saajna
Angana phool khilege……….

Barsega saawan,
barsega saawan…..
Jhoom jhoom ke…
Do dil aise milenge

Aaoge Jab Tum Saajna.
Angana phool khilege

Naina tere kajrare hai..
Naino pe hum dil hare hai..

Anjane hi tere naino ne..
Waade kiye kayi saare hai
Saanso he leher..maddam chale..
To se kahe..

Barsega saawan
Barsega saawan….
Jhoom jhoom ke…
Do dil aise milenge

Aaoge Jab Tum Saajna..
Angana phool khilege..

Chanda ko uta raton mein……
Hai zindagi tere haton mein..
Palko pe jhil mil tare hai……
Aana bahri barsato me..
Sapno ka jahan…
Hoga khila khila……..

Barsega saawan,
barsega saawan………
Jhoom jhoom ke……..
Do dil aise milenge…

From the film Jab We Met.

This a lovely song, sung by Ustad Rashid Khan. This song has become a favourite of mine since I heard it for the first time on the OST of the film. It has found a permanent place on the favourites playlist. Its one of those which is both happy yet sad and has poignant lyrics. There’s both longing and anticipation of meeting again.

For me, the best lines are these…

Naina tere kajrare hai..
Naino pe hum dil hare hai..

Anjane hi tere naino ne..
Waade kiye kayi saare hai…

So true no?

[Update: Seeing as so many people have landed up on this page searching for a translation of this song, I feel obliged to offer the translation. So here it is, beneath the fold. A note of caution however, my poetry skills suck 😀 and I’ve taken a few liberties with the composition of sentences here, but I guess I’ve stayed true to the meaning of the song]

When you come to me dear,
Blossoms will flower in the courtyard
It will rain then, rain that sways as if dancing
Two hearts will thus meet…
When you come to me dear,
Blossoms will flower in the courtyard…

Your eyes are kohl-lined,
And I’ve lost my heart to your eyes,
Your eyes have(unwittingly) made promises too many,
The stream of my breath sways slowly,
To tell you that…
When you come to me, dear
Blossoms will flower in the courtyard…

I look at the moon during the night,
I rest my life in your hands,
In your eyes I see the shining stars,
Come to me when the monsoon rages….
The world of our dreams will be realised then…
It will rain then, rain that sways as if dancing
Two hearts will thus meet.

Where Am I?
