The Despair of Champions…

…is real.

It is never enough. The effort. The moment he puts in that extra ounce of it and succeeds, it becomes the standard against which he is measured. As a result, he puts in more effort than he did in the previous month. Or the previous year.

The walk to the podium is longer than the year before. He walks past applauding people, smiling people, fake-smiling people and people who would like him to go away so that they can be where he is. He receives the award with a smile as fake as the one put on by the honcho giving the award.

As he walks back, the award feels light in his hands. Light as it may be, he knows that there is a heavier burden he will have to carry. Of expectations. From others and of his own.

It is never enough. The effort. He knows it won’t be this time either.
