No, this is not a post about my mom or anybody’s mom for that matter. Its a post on linguistics. That means the way we speak/write.
I’ve got profiles on orkut, facebook etc. and I have noticed a very weird trend among the denizens of this space. The trend is of writing “my” as “ma”. I see this everywhere. On captions of pictures, on scrapbooks, on status messages. Stuff like “me and ma friends”, “ma dog”, “ma bike”, “ma book and ma bag”, “Finally, I got ma degree”. I feel astonished at this. What purpose does replacing ‘y’ with ‘a’ serve? Does it make it easier to pronounce? Does it somehow shorten a two letter word? Does it make it sound intelligent? Sigh. No easy answer to this, I fear.
