Tose Naina Lage

February 3, 2007 § 30 Comments

Over the years, I have listened to quite a lot of songs…some of which i’ve loved and yet others which I’ve hated…there have been quite a lot of the latter…though i’ve liked Lucky Ali’s songs and A.R.Rahman’s very much, the jhinchaak variety of music that people produce now-a-days are unimpressive. Which is why I was more than happy to hear some new songs by a new music director named Mithoon. Now, this dude besides being my namesake and all, is brilliant with music scores. Like “Maula Mere Maula” from Anwar. The one that took my heart and all its veins along with it was “Tose Naina Lage” from the same film.

The song is pure emotion…of love, regret, happiness and what not…its just eternal. It makes me wanna believe…

The lyrics of the song(with translation):

Tose nainaa laage [2]
Tose nainaa laage piyaa savren, (your eyes touch me)
Nahi basamein ab ye jiyaa savren (my heart has lost control) [2]
Muhobbat to ek jaavedaa jindagi hai (love is eternal in life) [2]
Tose nainaa laage mili roshani, (when your eyes touched me, I found light)
Tose man jo laagaa mili jindagi (when your soul touched me I found life) [2]
Muhobbat to ek jaavedaa jindagi hai [2]

Muhobbat ki hai daasataa jindagi, (love is the story of life)
Muhobbat naa ho to kahaa jindagi (what is life without love) [2]
Muhobbat to ek jaavedaa jindagi hai [2]
Tose nainaa laage

Shamaa ko pighalane kaa armaan kyun hai, (why does a candle have the desire to melt)
Patangeko jalane kaa aramaan kyun hai, (why does a moth have the desire to burn)
Isi shauk kaa imtihaan jindagi hai (life is the test of these desires) [2]

Muhobbat jise baksh de jindagaani (life pardons those who love)
Nahi maut par khatm usaki kahaani (the story of their love does not end with their death)

Kaise jiyaa jaaye [3]… ishq bin (how can one live… without love)
Nahi koi insaan muhobbat se khaali (there is no human being who is empty of love)
Har ek ruh pyaasi har ek dil savaani (every soul is thirsty for it, every heart goes mad for it)
Muhobbat jahaan hai wahaa jindagi hai (wherever there is love, there is life)
Muhobbat naa ho to kahaa jindagi hai (without love there is no life)
Tose nainaa laage mili roshani, (when your eyes touched me, I found light)
Tose man jo laagaa mili jindagi (when your soul touched me I found life) [2]
Muhobbat jise baksh de jindagaani
Nahi maut par khatm usaki kahaani (their story of their love does not end with their death)

So nice it is…

Loved the translation. PI agree – the songs divine. Keep up the good work with the translations!! 🙂

  • sneha says:

the song is more abt life(widout lov)..
do u think the whole translation is crrct???
me thinks abt some crrctions…dunno if it is absolutely crrct…but still mentioning..checkout..
*Muhobbat jise baksh de jindagaani (life pardons those who love)
i feel ,it means when love forgives(pardons) tht is cald life..

*Muhobbat ki hai daasataa jindagi, (love is the story of life)
..story of love is nothing but life…

  • mithunkotian says:

    @sneha
to each their own, but i guess there could be various interpretations of the lyrics(that is as anyone sees fit)…even i have a different take on that now…u have to see it in totality

*Muhobbat jise baksh de jindagaani, nahin maut par khatam uski kahani
means….those who are gifted (life) with love, their story does not end with death…or somewhat to that effect….

  • sneha says:

@hmm,nw tht sounds more perfect…ie when two lines taken together…good..

  • ruapnanda says:

i love each n every word of the song
i potray the depth of love n agony too
brilliant lyrics n vocal n music too
tone n rythym is awesome.its one of the most puriest love songs.this song signifies how beautyful n pure love is n can be if wants to be.it also shows the depthof relation too
this song is life for me n my sister

  • Riz says:

Mohobat jise baksh de zingahi…translates more to…. Love has credited someone life (for without love life was not worth living) love has saved him from living a life with no depth,no real meaning

  • nadia says:

    what does savren mean?

  • Mithun says:

@riz: agreed. the meaning depends on how each one of us sees it. I saw it as love being immortal, not ending with death…so i wrote it so.

@nadia: savren is a form of ‘savra’ which means dark skinned. Lord Krishna in Hindu mythology is said to be dark skinned (blue actually) and is sometimes referred to as savren. Even in the video of this song, the protagonist is shown as Krishna.

  • […] of this blog, I have brought to the readers translations of some good, meaningful songs like Javeda Zindagi and Aaoge Jab Tum and lyrics/translations of some weird songs like You are my chicken fry and Love […]

  • Harsh says:

    Hello All,

    Fantastic…

    Nice translation Mithoon da… 🙂

Really touching song… I keep it with old songs… It creates the same waves as the old song does…

And the most fantastic thing is to see that much discussion going on…

I was just searching for the lyrics of song (actually the meaning of “Jaaveda”, which I got it here) and came to know about such a sensible discussion went (of course, I am very late 😐 ).

Applause (self) for the discussion and for you people.

  • Ashutosh says:

I agree this song is about love and life together. Beautiful… I have listened to it more than say 30 times in 2 days – each time I get better with the meaning. Then I saw the film to get a better understanding..

Its like love has pardoned him with life. Now his life(story) is not going to be over even if he dies. For love is eternal or spiritual life… and not physical one.

  • zaidwani says:

your translation is very good brother but” Muhobbat jise baksh de jindagaani”is better translated as ‘To whomsoever love gives life’ and then
Nahi maut par khatm usaki kahaani (the story of their love does not end with their death)

    Excellent Job Keep it up

  • Sheena says:

    Mithun,
I’ve been brought up in America, and so I don’t listen to hindi songs at all, but when I recently visited India this song (tose naina) really caught my attention. It’s so peaceful and soothing. The song also has such a deep meaning to it I truly love it.

    dear all fellows…

you all were engaged with a beautiful discussion about…
    “Muhobbat jise baksh de jindagaani”….
each and every one share their feelings which had been seen by them individually…
i also want to contribute in this…

    i love this song also…

    now, let star from end…

    “baksh de jindagaani”…

the literal meaning is “life is forgiven…”

    by whom, why…??

and the final question is HOW….??

    whom… which one you love…

    why…you love him/her…

but how the life can be forgiven…??

here the ans is “Baksh de”…

    in eng… Sacrifice…

here the “mohabbat” is personified as “jise”….

so, the meaning stands for “Muhobbat jise baksh de jindagaani”…

mohabbat sacrificed (baksh de) the life (jindegani)….

    is passive form…

when the life has been sacrificed for love,….
(jab zindegi mohabbat ke liye khud kohi baksh de dete hay…)

the story of his/her love will not end at his/her death…
(nehi maut par khatam uski kahani…)

    this is mu opinion…

    suggest any comment please…

    this song is my life…

    • Mithun says:

a very good point of view this…this song (and all meaningful songs really) have this excellent property of meaning different things to different people based on their life experiences. The lyrics of this song are pretty abstract, which lead to many meanings. I am grateful to you for having taken the time to bring this meaning to my knowledge. Thanks.

am really fascinated by d kind of discussion goin on in here , no matter hw u want tak on d words and its meaning but d gud thing z ds dat evn youngr generation r willing n botherin to accept d slow and deep sense lyrics.
in urdu language BAQSH means GIFT,neva the less its othr meanin z forgivin hweva wt i cn understn z dt writter z tryin to say dt wn love enters in anyones
life.or wn love blossoms in someones life like a new life blossm inside a mother’s womb.or like a life blossoms out of a seed dt luks dead. in d same way life dts dry or meaningless gets a meaning or reason to live n to see d beauty of life by being in love.
so its kind of eternal gift .
muhabbat jise baqsh de zindeghani nahi maut par khtm uski kahani.
plz ignore if derz sum english prob or mstk in mah post.

agar gaane ke meaning 1 ya 2 line pe bataye jaye to…

mohabbat me aap kuch bhi demand nehi sakte…
eha tak bhi…aap use dekhne ka bhi mang nehi karsakte….

    in English…

don’t think what you get from love…

Instead of “When ur eyes touched me, I found light” – “I found light through u / ur eyes”.

    it make this song sweeter….

      to dear Anonymous,

the meaning of gift in Urdu is TOFA not Baksh.

i am fully aware about the meaning…

here Baksh represents “jo zindegi ka bhi bina parwa kiye, modabbat ke liye “rahem” ya “kurban” karde…”

in sidhi baat “chor diye tujhe zindegi mohabbat ke liye…”

here baksh is used as a poetic meaning….

i will be grateful if the proper meaning of each word in Urdu used here would not be indulged…

      have a nice day….
